Napoleon Bonaparte was not a tall man. Regardless, he was prone to statements of fundamental and lasting truth. For example, Napoleon is known to have said “Un bon croquis vaut mieux qu’un long discours”, which translates to “A good sketch is better than a long speech”. Despite his eloquence, the good people of France were surely grateful Napoleon felt this way. Unfortunately for Napoleon, his soldiers, and the good people of Austria, Britain, Egypt, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Prussia, Russia, and Spain, a sketch wasn’t quite enough to spread new ideas at the turn of the (nineteenth) century.
Thankfully, with the help of technology, things have changed. Now that powerful cameras are small enough that they can fit in a pocket, photographers of all skill levels are easily able to capture their environment as they see it. Social media allows them to share it with the world. Whether it’s a new angle on a building one sees every day, or a location they’ll almost certainly never visit, the result is collective exposure to something new. The obstacles to an expanded horizon have been reduced to curiosity and imagination.
And this is worth celebrating. So Livestock is hosting a photography show in Portland to highlight the work of some of its most talented photographers. By virtue of taking beautiful photos, which they then share on social media, all of the photographers have built a large and loyal following.
